Blogging is a great way to become an influencer and thought leader in your industry. For some businesses it’s also a great way to get new customers.

Here are some of the basics on how:

  1. Know your audience
    This will help you to determine the topics that you write about, your writing style and language used. Take a moment to think about your audience… their demographics, interests and any problems that they might face.
  2. Select a topic that will solve a problem
    Writing about how to solve a problem allows you to target potential customers who are looking for a solution.
  3. Format your article for skimmers
    Keep skimmers in mind and try to use short paragraphs that are no more than 3 sentences long. Bullet points and images can also be used to make your content easier to consume.
  4. Don’t write an advertorial
    A blog post shouldn’t be a promotion. Try and provide useful information. If there’s an offer, place it at the bottom or somewhere that isn’t going to distract the reader.
  5. Use a bold call to action
    If you want the reader to visit your sales page or opt-in to a freebie, make it clear. Use a prominent “download it now” button on your page. A common mistake is trying to blend something into the blog as a link at the bottom of the post.
  6. Use retargeting
    Use tracking pixels on your pages and then create ads that follow your readers around the internet. Some examples of this include Google AdWords, Perfect Audience and Facebook Custom Audiences.
